Photographer to Film maker workshop - 12th June 2023 - 10am - 4pm
I’ve always loved film. I have fond memories of my childhood playing with my sister and making daft films on the video recorder. Later in life I found a real passion and love for films and today I often watch films not for the story but for the storytelling and cinematic art. If I’m completely honest I sometimes love filming more than photography because a moving image is so much more powerful than a still one. When covid struck I saw it as an opportunity to learn and add onto my businesses. Slowly over the last three years it’s grown into something I never thought it would. I’ve filmed over 120 films for couples, families and commercial projects since March 2020. I’ve learnt SO MUCH.
One side of my business (With Abandon Elopements) is where I ONLY offer film. This is because I’ve found my true love, filming nature, big landscapes and how we interact with that landscape is by far my biggest love.
Controversially I’ve also learnt a lot about the way I do my films, they are absolutely not the way videographers produce them, I don’t use expensive software and I use tools I’ve already got for my photography business. I use my two cameras I shoot weddings on, I don’t use a gimbal or anything heavy duty. My aim is and always has been to not look like I’m filming. To blend in, so that no wedding ever knows when I’m photographing or filming.
I make it very clear that I’m no videographer, I’m a photographer who makes highlight films. MY way. There are no speeches or full ceremony or full first dance. I don’t enjoy filming those things, but I always tell couples to ensure that if they want these things they hire a professional Videographer.
Finally after 3 years I feel ready to teach again, and have decided to offer a one day workshop in my studio in Ulverston for any photographer who wants to start including video into their business. You may not be in the wedding industry, you may work primarily with families, corporate, landscape, products or even boudoir. It doesn’t matter, what I know can be applied to any type of business.
With the rise of Tik Tok and other video sharing platforms I’ve seen a real need for including videos in my business. Often, wedding couples in particular struggle to afford both a photographer and a videographer. Often opting for a photographer only. I’ve found that the couples I’ve produced films for would NEVER have had the budget to have a videographer and so the highlight film they’ve had from me on top of their photography has been cherished. The workflow behind producing a film the way I do is very easily inserted into the same workflow as photos.
So, if you feel you’re in a place in your business where you want to add video on but don’t know where to start, then this is for you.
